I wrote a previous newsletter on Scareware and how not to be fooled by this virus and how to stay safe. It appears there is now a new type of virus that is taking it a step further. This new virus is being classified as Ransomware and the Metropolitan Police is issuing warnings about this ransom malware. Ransomware restricts access to your computer and will demand cash to remove the restrictions. Our computer technicians in Bozeman, MT have had experience with this type of virus before and it can be very annoying and aggravating for people who have come across it. From our experience it presents you with a web page that automatically makes itself full screen and appears to be issued from a government type agency such as the Metropolitan Police or the FBI and you can’t close or minimize the page. The page reads that it has detected illegal activity and that your computer has been locked until you pay a legal fine. It then gives you a link to click on in order to pay this “fine”.

The official Metropolitan Police issued the following warning:

“We would advise anyone who has been deceived by such a message and parted with any money to report the offence to their local police by dialling "101" or your local police. Virus/Malware infections where no money has been lost can be logged at www.actionfraud.org.uk/report_fraud."

Since you are unable to close it or minimize it the only thing left is to power off your computer. Simply hold down the power button on your computer until it powers off. This may not be the best thing to do, but in this case you are very limited in what you can do. Our computer repair technicians  in Bozeman, MT have seen the screen go away after rebooting, but most of the time it will come right back after Windows starts. If it does you may need to contact a computer repair technician to remove the virus from your computer. Our technicians have been able to easily remove the virus by booting into Windows Safe Mode and running a program called Malwarebytes. You then reboot back into normal Windows and it is gone.

If you need help removing this virus or have any other type of computer problems please contact us and our computer technicians will be happy to help. We also offer a specialized Managed Service provider service to help prevent viruses and will report to us if one is detected.
